Meeting - Using Python to Quality Check your Data

Meeting - Using Python to Quality Check your Data

Join us for our September meeting where member Ann Stark (GIS Manager for the City of Bellingham) will be showing us how to use python to quality check your data. During our yearly member survey, Python was one of the top 3 topics WWGT members wanted to learn more about. Thank you Ann for sharing your knowledge and workflows!

The City of Bellingham uses python scripts to run quality checks on feature classes to make sure that feature edits don’t create illogical conditions.  The most extensive check is for addressing data, searching for things like addressing marked as a unit address but no unit specified, or an address marked as a Bellingham address, but not falling within the city limits. In total, there are 29 logic checks that are completed in the script.  After running the logic checks, the results are emailed to the editors, and they can take action to correct any issues identified.  In this presentation, Ann will show how we use python and a JSON configuration file to manage this script and the email output it creates.  She will also touch on other topics like using a python script template, logging script outputs, emailing users, generally how python is used at the City of Bellingham.  There will be lots of time for questions.

Ann Stark has been using python to manage GIS tasks for 15 years at the City of Bellingham.  She is a self-taught Python coder with years of hands-on scripting experience. Ann brings humor and an engaging teaching style and has earned a reputation as a dynamic and enjoyable educator. Being self-taught, she remembers the pitfalls of getting started in a solo environment and can offer advice on how to grow your skills.

Meeting - Using Workflow Manager/Tasks and Attribute Rules in ArcGIS Pro

Meeting - Using Workflow Manager/Tasks and Attribute Rules in ArcGIS Pro

Join us for our November meeting where we will discuss tools to help manage people, processes and products in ArcGIS Pro.  Kaitlin E. Schrup and Tonya Kauhi will share their experiences using Tasks in Workflow Manager and Attribute Rules.

ArcGIS Pro Tasks are a great way to introduce a new standardized step-by-step workflow or streamline existing workflow processes. Come and learn how the Puyallup Tribe of Indians GIS Department utilized ArcGIS Pro Task and ArcGIS Pro Task Manager to empower non-traditional GIS users, Tribal Fisheries Biologists, to generate a map series of field-collected data for the “Puyallup Tribal Fisheries Annual Salmon, Steelhead, and Bull Trout Report.”

Attribute rules enhance the editing experience and improve data integrity for geodatabase datasets. They are user-defined rules that can be used to automatically populate attributes, restrict invalid edits during edit operations, and perform quality assurance checks on existing features. Learn the benefits of using attribute rules and how to set them up in the geodatabase.

We hope to leave you with some tangible tips to use on your next project.

This is a virtual event, please email wawomeningis@gmail.com to request the meeting link.

Kaitlin is a Certified Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) serving as the GIS Analyst for the Puyallup Tribe of Indians, where she provides geospatial solutions to promote the preservation of the Tribe’s resources and sovereignty. She has seven years of experience working in the geospatial industry community for various county, local and Tribal governments; private and non-profit businesses. She is skilled in data analytics, cartography, web map application design, workflow processing, and spatial problem solving and is well-versed with various GIS technologies, including data collection methods. In addition, Kaitlin has a particular interest in promoting inclusive geospatial mapping solutions to community members.

Tonya has more than 22 years’ experience focusing on GIS, databases and applications and currently serves as a GIS Data Analyst for the WA State Department of Health. She has extensive experience in the collection, management, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of geospatial data and, throughout her career, has provided GIS services and management for a variety of clients including state agencies, municipalities, mining companies, water districts, and privately held companies.

Celebrate and Honor Zander

Angelina Wainhouse, a WWGT group member, lost her son, Zander, to brain cancer last year.  In honor of Zander, Angelina is walking to raise awareness and money to cure pediatric brain cancer.  Let’s honor Zander and help her reach her goal by sharing the message and, if you are able, by donating $14 (for his 14th bday) to cancer research.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family Angelina.  Please consider donating before May 31, 2022.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From Angelina:

Asking if you would consider supporting our family’s fundraiser to raise money for research towards a cure for pediatric brain cancer. We’re doing the fundraiser in honor of my son, Zander who passed in December 2021 after a brave 350-day battle with cancer. In honor of Zander on his upcoming 14th birthday, I’m walking 350km in April and May (Brain Cancer Awareness Month), a km for each day Zander lived with a cancer diagnosis. We’re partnering with the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation to raise funds to help find a cure for pediatric brain cancer. We need 1000 donors to each give $14 or more to reach our goal of $14000. Would you please consider giving to this cause, and sharing this with your network on email, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram? I would appreciate your support so very much, and my momma’s heart would be comforted to know that Zander’s short life is still making a difference in this world!

Please consider giving to Zander's birthday (4/24) fundraiser.

Social Hour - Galentine's Day

Galentine’s Day is just around the corner!  For those of you who may not know what the heck Galentine’s Day is, it’s a day for women to celebrate women (hey we do that every day! 😊). It’s Valentine’s Day with your gals.  The new holiday debuted in a 2010 episode of Parks and Recreation where the fictional deputy director of Parks and Recreation in Pawnee, Indiana, Leslie Knope celebrated the joy of her female friendships over brunch with waffles and excessive gift giving.

To celebrate our WA Women in GIS & Technology (WWGT) women, please join us virtually on February 16th at 6PM for our version of Galentine’s Day. While we cannot offer waffles or excessive gifts, we do have special activities planned: including a craft activity, chocolate tasting, and trivia contest.  We will be mailing an activity bag before the event, so please RSVP as soon as possible and no later than February 3rd to wawomeningis@gmail.com.

We encourage you to find a buddy or two to attend the event together in person (depending on your COVID comfort level), if you need help finding a WWGT Galantine in your area, please contact us and we will help pair you up.

Thank you and we hope to see all the “poetic and noble land mermaids” there!
